Habitat: the land of the panda





Pandas live mainly bamboo forest in the mountains of western China. Most of the 
distribution of the wild population between Qinling Mountains and Minshan .

The giant panda was once widespread throughout southern and eastern China as well as neighboring Myanmar ( Burma) and northern Vietnam.
Due to the expansion of human populations and development , the species is now limited to only 20 or less isolated patches of mountain forest in Sichuan, Shaanxi and Gansu.

Panda habitat surrounding the great plain of Sichuan. To the north are the Qinling Mountains and west are Minshan , Qionglai , Liangshan Mountains and Daxiangling Xiaoxiangling .

Conservation work of WWF panda to date have focused on Minshan and Qinling .

The increase in protected areas
Governments of the provinces of Sichuan , Shaanxi and Gansu , in close collaboration with the WWF , have created new nature reserves and the expansion of existing reserves.

Minshan Mountains

Minshan Mountains flank the eastern edge of the Tibetan Plateau , the highest and largest in the world plateau.
These mountains form a natural barrier between the provinces of southern and eastern China populated and the great desert of the Tibetan plateau , to the west.

WWF has identified the Minshan mountain in Sichuan and Gansu as a landscape of particular importance for biodiversity: its beautiful forest home to an incredible variety of wildlife , in addition to the giant panda as the dwarf blue sheep and beautiful multicolored pheasants.

There are about 720 pandas in the mountains Minshan , 45 % of the total wild population. Pingwu County , Minshan Mountain area has the highest density of pandas in the wild .

Qinling Mountains

Qinling Mountains in Shaanxi , forms a natural barrier between north and south China and south protects against the cold northern climate and hot showers on the southern slopes support a rich variety of plants and animals.
It is important for China as a drop in the Qinling Mountains milestone , it could end up in one of the country's two major rivers , the Yangtze and Yellow .

There are about 200 to 300 hundred pandas in the Qinling Mountains , 20% of the total wild population. The region also has a number of other endangered species such as the golden monkey, takin and crested ibis species.
